The first fundraising Quiz Night of 2016 saw a fantastic turnout with all tables at the newly refurbished Wash & Tope comfortably full with keen quiz teams. The atmosphere all night long was a mixture of intense concentration, laughs and, of course, some great socialising too. What more could you want!
The music round kept everyone stumped and had to be played out at least 3-4 times. There was a clear thread of British-based questions in line with this year’s Carnival theme of “The Best of British” and the questions certainly tested everyone’s grey matter. Following a mid-way break, the teams were treated to the makings of some great Chip Butties courtesy of The Wash & Tope and boy did those very fresh chips smell good (I did not indulge!). Our very own mascot, the Carnival Lion, popped in for a brief visit and enjoyed a little bop whilst he was there. Before long the final rounds were done and quizmaster, Steve, ably supported by his accomplice, Graham, soon declared the winning team and the booby prize winner.
Naturally there was the raffle draw – we were after all trying to raise money for the 2016 Carnival extravaganza. The big raffle was kicked off by Deputy Mayor Cllr James Johnson (soon to be Mayor) drawing the first ticket. The young man who won first prize was no doubt delighted with his Vax Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner, as was the winner of the second ticket who was all lined up to win the very large teddy! Then in stepped landlady, Laurie, who offered an alternative prize of a gift voucher for a one night stay at The Wash & Tope for a couple with breakfast and dinner which he gratefully accepted. This led the way clear for a third raffle winner, a young gentleman who it turned out had had his heart set on winning the teddy so that was a result if ever there was one.
After a highly enjoyable night Steve thanked everyone for supporting the event, especially The Wash & Tope, who kindly gave a cash donation to the kitty. The Carnival Committee were very grateful for the hospitality and the support given by the Laurie & Phil, the landlady and landlord of The Wash & Tope. By all accounts there will be many more Quiz Nights to look forward to so look out for news of these and other events.
