The day began looking very grim with gloomy skies but hour by hour as the morning wore on it brightened up. By the time the stallholders were ready to rock at 10am the sun was out and a glorious Carnival Day beckoned. Following something of a photoshoot session on the wonderful London Routemaster bus outside Hunstanton Tourist Information Office, the Hunstanton Town Mayor Cllr James Johnson marched with the Carnival Lion from the Golden Lion Hotel alongside the Carnival Queen, Makayla Rule, and her Princesses (Purity-Rose Ologhoejebi, Lily Rose, Eleanor Hollin and Zerrin Mitchell across the green to the stage to formally open the 2016 Hunstanton Carnival.
Once the official ceremony was done they made their way to the Recreation Ground where the floats and walking parade entries were all assembled as usual. The Carnival theme of “The Best of British” brought out a lot of great ideas for parade entries including “The Great British Bake Off” and “The Best of British Music”. There were a lot of excited children eager to get on with it and eventually the parade was lined up with The Cambridge Caledonian Pipe Band and made their way through the streets and on to the green which were lined with what must have been thousands of spectators. The numbers were truly amazing and much appreciated by the organising Committee.
The winning floats were declared by Mayor Cllr James Johnson as:
- Best Adult Float: Rock Choir
- Best Children’s Float: Scouts & Beavers
The weather held up beautifully with the exception of a small, but significant downpour, mid-afternoon following the wonderful display put on by the Wildcat Aerobatics team. The boys in flight did us proud once again and put on a stunning show. We look forward to this continuing to be an annual tradition.
